Dental inlays and onlays are partial crowns that can restore teeth that are heavily damaged or broken. You can find the best dental fillings near you at Dental Line. Here, when you first see our dentist, we’ll take an impression of your damaged tooth and send that off to our labs. We’ll create a mold from the tooth to have a partial crown custom made by our best technicians for your individual dental needs.

The difference between inlays and onlays is how the partial crown is attached to your natural tooth. In most cases, both types will be bonded to your tooth, but onlays will go over the cusps of your teeth while inlays will stay between them. Dental Inlays and Onlays are made of porcelain or composite resin and are used to repair small chips and cracks in teeth that aren’t large enough for a full crown but still need to be fixed.

Inlays are small pieces of porcelain or other materials placed on the surface of teeth to restore or improve their appearance and functionality. They can cover chips, cracks, or gaps in your teeth. Inlays often replace large fillings that need to be removed due to decay or damage.

Onlays are similar to inlays but are larger and cover more tooth structure than an inlay does. An onlay is an artificial covering for a damaged tooth. Onlays can be used to repair large areas of enamel damaged by decay or trauma, such as a fall or sports injury. They can also replace large composite dental fillings that may have broken apart over time.

Dental inlays repair minor damage to a tooth’s surface. They are similar to fillings but are made of a more durable material that lasts longer. Onlays restore teeth that are more extensively damaged. Onlays extend onto the cusps and cover a bigger area of the chewing surface, while inlays are typically limited to areas between the cusps and cover less area.

Contact Us
If you have a broken or chipped tooth, there are two options for restoring it: a crown or a dental inlay or onlay. We will take an x-ray to determine if you are a candidate for either option.

Crowns are typically used to restore teeth damaged by decay or injury. The crown is made of porcelain (plastic) and metal and covers the entire tooth surface. Inlays and onlays are similar to crowns but cover only part of the tooth surface instead of the entire tooth.

Contact Us
The first step is to determine if you are a candidate for either inlays or onlays. Your dentist will take X-rays and make an impression on your teeth. They will then discuss your options with you before creating an accurate model of your mouth. A mold is made from this model and sent to an outside lab where the inlay or onlay is created from porcelain or resin composite resin material. The lab returns the completed inlay or onlay back to the Dental Line, where Dr. Starchenko will place it directly over the damaged area of your tooth.

First Appointment

As mentioned above, x-rays are taken to determine if you are a candidate for inlay or onlay treatment. If so, we will take impressions of your teeth and send them to the lab. The lab creates a model of your teeth before beginning work on your new restoration. Because inlays and onlays need to be fabricated outside of the Dental Line, their placement can’t be accomplished in one dental visit. Dr. Starchenko will place temporary cemented dental fillings on your teeth to ensure that you will not experience any discomfort while waiting for your second appointment.

Second Appointment

Once you have returned to our office for the second appointment, we will remove any remaining temporary cemented tooth filling and apply a light etch to help bond the new inlay/onlay to your tooth. We will then place the customized mold over the tooth and use a special curing light to harden it. After several minutes, we will clean off any excess material and polish the surface of your new inlay/onlay for a natural look.

Inlays and onlays are fixed restorations that are cemented into place. They are more conservative than full crowns because they don’t require the removal of as much tooth structure. When possible, it makes sense to opt for inlays or onlays rather than a full crown. This type of tooth filling cost is also less expensive and less invasive than a full crown.
